In order to make Big Indian a year-round functioning place to be and to help our youth members gain confidence in project activities, we are all building a Community Yurt in Big Indian this July.
The Yurt building project is a Youth skill enhancement project and will be led by Tyler Cicchetti. Using almost all natural materials, such as saplings and earth, we will augment these with lashings and some home-made solutions to traditional Yurt building practices. The Yurt platform is 50 feet in diameter and will be raised slightly to protect it from water runoff. Once constructed, the Yurt will serve the community for gatherings, youth events, meditations, teaching and also group stay for events. There will be a woodstove installed in the middle and some seating around the circumference.
Everyone is welcome for any or all of the Yurt building days, it is particularly helpful if you have skills in woodworking or woodsman ship. Meals and drinks will be served to the volunteers and we will spend the earlier parts of the nights around a warm camp fire at the Mariamma statue. Please bring foods to share for as many meals as you can even though some food will be provided. Camping is welcome and some tents can be provided on a first come first serve basis for those who reserve the tent or come earliest.
The work starts Friday at 9:00 AM until Sunday 4:00 – 5:00 PM or however long we can go.
